HISTORY

Kolony® Tea Estate was acquired in 1958 by the Sheoparshad group of Dehra Dun, also known as the “Chaiwala” Family (which means the Family of Tea-makers), from The Anglo-American Direct Tea Trading Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the James Finlay Group. The Family has had a substantial interest in tea since 1932, owning several plantations in Assam, Darjeeling, Dooars, and the Kangra Valley.

In 1967, the consolidated family group was divided amongst the members of the next generation and Kolony® Tea Estate passed on to Mr. Mahendra Kumar Gupta and the business operations were shifted to Calcutta. Today, Kolony® is headed by third-generation planter, Mr. Gaurav Kumar Gupta, who has more than twenty years of experience in the tea business.

Situated on the Northern Banks of the Brahmaputra River, in Assam, India, Kolony® Tea Estate produces approximately 1.4 million kgs of fine quality CTC and Orthodox teas. The Estate is located within the 26°48' 25.0"N and 92°42' 45.0"E with an elevation of 92.45 meters above sea level and covers an area of 469 hectares under cultivation.

The production yield is approximately 2700 kgs/hectare, which is much higher than the national industry average. The appropriate selection of high-yielding and quality clones, at the time of plantation, has ensured us the essential balance between, achieving good production yields and also manufacturing superior quality teas.
